Ms. McCune takes a look at what happens when two cultures come into conflict, and how such conflict can be resolved ... or not. Her story brings the place and time period into sharp relief, and her characters are realistic and believable. A good read!

Not your mother's women's novel! A great tour of Ireland as well as a thought-provoking tale. I guess it is my age that kept me hoping that Carol from America and the attractive Irishman, Flarity, would not end up together. They have such different backgrounds; such different takes on what life should be. But they are trying hard to make it work, so strong is their mutual desire. You'll have to read the story to find out whether or not they succeed. What ending will you hope for? It will be worth the read for sure. You will feel as though you are there in the picturesque countryside, in the run-down sleeping rooms, in the bustling cities and taverns. Don't pass up the journey!
A quick, absorbing, fun read. If you like Maeve Binchy or Rosamund Pilcher, you will like this delightful tale by an author new to me. But I like McCune's little book even better than Pilcher's short stories; the latter are so somber and predictable. McCune gives us snappier dialogue, just the right amount of humor, and suspense. Yes, suspense! I couldn't for the life of me predict the ending.
The characters are so believable, even their wavering. Such behavior is consistent with the time period and culture - 1970s, Irish Catholic (guilt), American sexual freedom. I'll be looking for more by this author.
This is a great little book. I could sympathize with both Carol, the young, liberal, woman from the US looking for a romantic adventure in Ireland, and Flarity, the young Catholic man plagued by guilt and a lack of understanding of the American he had met and was attracted to. The trip through Ireland, the Irish bars and musicians, the Irish family dynamics, the clash of cultures and lifestyles, made for a entertaining and moving story. I was torn between rooting for their love and knowing it would probably be a personality clash for as long as they were together. I've read one other McCune novel, The Saint Came Stumbling In, which was very different, longer, and a much more traditionnal and funny romance. It's hard to believe these are from the same author, showing that McCune seems to have a wide range of talent in multiple genres. Read both her books for the full range of what she can do.
Upon completing this short book, I was at a loss for words. By way of explanation, let me explain that I'm new to this genre---my typical reading covers the classics, essays, nonfiction, and male-oriented adventure/outdoors writing. Therefore, I re-read Bonnie McCune's book and was struck by the sharp similarity between Dante's Divine Comedy---where the pilgrim encountered a gate with the inscription "I am the way into the doleful city, I am the way into eternal grief....Abandon every hope, all who enter"---and Irish Episode, where Carol and James enter James' Irish abode to confront their own doleful relationship and grief, and concludes with abandoning all hope for a lasting union. Both Dante's and McCune's works are allegorical, and both discuss the fleshly sins of the damned, as well as virtue and theology, but of course, Irish Episode does not pretend to be a complex work of literature. This quick read gets a strong 4 stars for delving into classic themes in an entertaining way.
This is an interesting development of characters - carefree, liberal Carol and James Flarity conflicted by Carol's liberalism and his own Catholic guilt. I enjoyed meeting them both. I also enjoyed the journey through 1970s Ireland. I felt as if I was there. A good read.
I enjoyed reading this short novella because Ms. McCune does a wonderful job of recreating the ambience of a beloved country as well as capturing two very different cultures coming together. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys good writing as well as being immersed in two personalities in a very short time. Check out her other books to experience a very talented author
Carol Donner, American personified and proud of it, meets Irish Catholic singer, and proud of it. The reader knows this is mixing oil and water but once begun I couldn't put it aside until read through....very well written as though the author had been the young woman herself....
